Hello World CGI Script in Perl
A CGI script can be as simple or complex as you need it to be. It could be in Perl, Java, Python or any programming language. At its core, a CGI application simply takes a request via HTTP (typically a web browser) and returns HTML. Lets look at a simple Perlà Hello World CGI script and break it down into its simplest forms. Hello World CGI Perl Script #!/usr/bin/perl print Content-type: text/html\n\n; print HTML; html head titleA Simple Perl CGI/title /head body h1A Simple Perl CGI/h1 pHello World/p /body HTML exit; If you run the program on the command line, youll see that it does exactly what youd expect. First, it prints the Content-type line, then it prints the raw HTML. In order to see it in action in a web browser, youll need to copy or upload the script to your web server and make sure the permissions are set correctly (chmod 755 on *nix systems). Once youve set it correctly, you should be able to browse to it and see the page displayed live on your server. The key line is the first print statement: print Content-type: text/html\n\n; This tells the browser that the document coming after the two newlines is going to be HTML. You must send a header so the browser knows what type of document is coming next, and you must include a blank line between the header and the actual document. Once the header is sent, its just a matter of sending the HTML document itself. In the above example, were using a here-doc to simplify printing a large chunk of plain text. Of course, this is really no different than having a plain HTML document sitting on your server. The real power of using a programming language like Perl to create your HTML comes when you add in some fancy Perl programming. Adding on to the Basic Script In the next example, lets take part of thisà time and date script and add it to your web page. #!/usr/bin/perl months qw(Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec); weekDays qw(Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun); ($second, $minute, $hour, $dayOfMonth, $month, $yearOffset, $dayOfWeek, $dayOfYear, $daylightSavings) localtime(); $year 1900 $yearOffset; $theTime $weekDays[$dayOfWeek] $months[$month] $dayOfMonth, $year; print Content-type: text/html\n\n; print HTML; html head titleA Simple Perl CGI/title /head body h1A Simple Perl CGI/h1 p$theTime/p /body HTML exit; This new CGI script will insert the current date into the page each time the script is called. In other words, it becomes a dynamic document that changes as the date changes, rather than a static document.

The Early American Republic And The Constitution Of Our...
, the Early American Republic faced numerous hardships from the beginning. More specifically, the framework, transitioning from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution of our multi-faceted government deemed itself controversial. In order for one to determine if the transition from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution was a major roadblock for American politics, we must analyze both standpoints of the argument. The two major views on this divide were the Federalists and Anti- Federalists. Federalists, predominantly landowners and industry workers, enjoyed the control by a strong, central government. On the contrary, Anti- Federalists, predominantly backcountry farmers and debtors, were already on the verge of tyrannyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Gordon Wood proclaims in Document 1, that the Articles of Confederation are too weak of a structure to handle a growing nation of this extent. Starting by listing numerous problems with, ââ¬Å"The Congress could not ta x and pay its bills. It could not feed, clothe, or supply the army. It could not levy tariffs to regulate trade or to retaliate against the mercantilist European empires.â⬠Wood says the inability to tax, maintain an army, or have tariffs leaves the United States without money, unable to operate. In Document 2, John Jay explicitly identifies as a Federalist when he states the benefits of being under the Constitution. ââ¬Å"If they see that our national government is efficient and well administered, our trade prudently regulated, our militia properly organized and disciplined, our resources and finances discreetly managed, our credit re-established, our people free, contented, and united, they will be much more disposed to cultivate our friendship than provoke our resentment.â⬠Jay is saying that with a proper militia, organized government and treasury, and regained trust through our citizens and credit, we are more likely to flourish rather than struggle, as we can befri end other nations easier. While the United States gained the reputability it desired, it took numerous compromises both internally and externally. Anti-Federalists, were predominantly in the lower echelon of society, fought for soverignty

Social Issues of Yesterday and Today Essay Example For Students
Social Issues of Yesterday and Today Essay Social Issues of Yesterday and Today Essay Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend or oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty, (John Fitzgerald Kennedy). The problems and social issues of our nation years ago have become the problems of today. John Fitzgerald Kennedy became the thirty-fifth president of the United States of America on January 20, 1961. Over thirty-five years later, the problems addressed in his Inaugural Speech are still important social issues of this age. One of the most important social issues expressed in this speech was freedom; the freedom of people from the oppression of Communism. John F. Kennedy made a promise to support any friend or oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. He believed that he had been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. But he knew that he was just the starting point, and it would take many generations to undo the oppression of Communism and the damage that it would cause globally. The predictions that were made in his speech were true; he was the beginning of the ending, and it took over thirty years of cold war to put an end to the greatest Communist nation in the world: the USSR. Although the surmise of the USSR has become history, communism is still alive and well today. The Peoples Republic of China is probably the largest of the few communist nations left in the world. Since the times of J.F.K. the United States has developed political tactics to fight the spread of communism rather that the use of war, such as that of Vietnam. The most common political tactics used are trade embargoes. A trade Embargo will not allow a nation or country to sell or trade certain products, or place a high tax on them so that the general consumer will not want to purchase that particular product. Because of trade embargos we are able to force other nations into submission without the use of force (war). John F. Kennedy also addressed the problem of poverty, not just with our nation, but as a global problem. This issue has been addressed in the past it is being addressed now and, it will be addressed in the future. The problem of poverty is a serious issue in our present generation. Good jobs are hard to find, which means that most of the jobs available are low paying, and that put a lot of people below the poverty line. Another problem associated with poverty is that some people are just lazy. They dont want to work, and why should they when the government will just pay their way? If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich (JFK). John Fitzgerald Kennedy indicated many social issues and problems, which needed to be dealt with not only by the government, but by the people as well. He had a vision for America and the world. John F. Kennedy knew that it would take a nation that was united for the common cause of world well being, so he made this call to action. Ask not what your county can do for youask what you can do for your countryAsk not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
